Asbestos Part Deux

January 19, 2010

Article to appear in Indoor Environmental Connections winter 2010about the long overdue expansion of the definition of asbestos. History and current topics are discussed as they relate to new evidence about other Elongated Mineral Particles and health effects.

Recent Projects

Consumer Product Testing

IATL recently opened a new division that has received third party accreditation under the Consumer Product Testing Commission. CP Labs tests various toys, materials, and consumer products for chemical hazards.

World Trade Center

IATL had received thousands of samples submitted from the WTC site in Lower Manhattan since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. These samples concerned asbestos in settled dust by TEM ASTM D5575 and D6480 Methods. These included building owner, tenant, and insurance company submittals.

In some cases, proprietary methods were quickly developed and validated for the analysis of various...

materials such as automobile ducting, clothing, ventilation filters, carpeting, etc.

Our laboratory director was selected by EPA to be part of their Expert Review Panel on WTC analytical methods.

Defense Department Study

On-going study at Defense Department site generating hundreds of samples in two months. PLM, TEM air, and TEM dust samples examined.

AHERA Clearance Air Testing

Thousands of TEM AHERA clearance air samples are analyzed each summer at IATL. This requires the use of round-the-clock shifts, courier services, and counter-to-counter airline coordination.

EPA Criminal Investigation Unit

EPA Criminal Investigation Unit has contracted IATL to provide laboratory services in the case of illegal dumping of asbestos in landfills.

IATL has employed various analytical methods including the EPA - Asbestos Superfund method for airborne asbestos.

Quarry Testing

TEM air tests using California Air Resources Board (CARB) and other specialized methods (IS010312) were employed to investigate asbestos from a quarry known to have processed raw amphibole asbestos.

IATL worked closely with State Health authorities to establish a database confirming the presence of asbestos and non-asbestos form amphibole minerals.

EPA Study

IATL was employed to investigate the effectiveness of various wipe materials for lead surveys. This was part of a study conducted by US EPA through Battelle National Laboratories.

The percent recoveries of the materials were compared. This study was partly responsible for EPA mandating the use of only certain matrix materials for lead dust testing published as part of ASTM E1792. IATL participated in other studies to test compositing of wipe samples.

Product Testing

IATL was able to present data demonstrating that chemical markers including the asbestos and lead content of an industrial paint matched microscopic residue left behind by unsuccessful remediation activities.

The ability of industrial brake drum cleaning apparatus to capture and filter asbestos was documented using various analytical approaches.

Pentagon and Uzbekistan

Standing water from fire fighting operations that accumulated after the tragedy at the Pentagon building on September 11, 2001 had to be tested for asbestos by TEM.

IATL has also received TEM asbestos air samples generated from Camp Freedom, Uzbekistan under a contract through the United States Army CHHPM.

Post Fire Testing

Hundreds of TEM surface dust analyses were used to evaluate post fire conditions in a multi-story office building. An extensive database exists regarding QA/QC practices of similar projects.

Amphibole Asbestos & Vermiculite

The PLM and TEM analysis of air and bulk samples from mines in the upper Midwest and quarries on the east coast were performed by IATL. Both of these projects required a diligent approach to the analysis of amphibole asbestos by PLM and TEM methods.

IATL is familiar with the subtleties of Vermiculite mineral investigations, including potential problems concerning amphibole identification (i.e. Tremolite, Actinolite, Richterite and Winchite). IATL employs experienced mineralogists on our technical staff.

EPA Superfund Sites

IATL continues to receive hundreds of soil, sediment, and sludge samples received from on-going asbestos investigations at several EPA Superfund sites.

Lead in Public and Military Housing

Thousands of lead paint, air, and wipe samples from public housing and military housing have been analyzed at IATL. Custom Electron Data Deliverables (EDD) to meet client needs were developed for these projects.

US Navy Testing

A ship demolition firm under contract by the US Navy, requires, as part of its on-going project, PCM results and associated TWA results posted to their email site daily. IATL is able to provide read-only submittals and monthly hardcopies as per the requirements of the Navy contract.

Historic Atlantic City Convention Hall

Hundreds of air monitoring samples were generated from the Historic Atlantic City Convention Hall. The samples would arrive at IATL by 1900 each evening. IATL was responsible for completing PCM and TEM air results in a time-sensitive manner so that hundreds of union workers could begin work the next morning,

Because of demolition activity at the site, many samples were too overloaded with particulate to be analyzed by direct means. An indirect protocol was established for the analysis of those samples by TEM-again, with results posted each morning. (see FAQ)
